Born in Rhyl. Twenty-five years in Sydney, where the painting started. Now working from Gilwern, South Wales.
I was born in Rhyl on the North Wales coast, and I have been fortunate to do a lot of travelling. I lived in Sydney for twenty-five years before coming home to be near family, and I now live in Gilwern in South Wales.
Art was always my best subject at school, but I did not pursue it as a career. In Sydney I ran a recruitment business specialising in the digital industry, which took up most of my time — then I started painting again, and did a few commissions for friends. I put three paintings into the Brave Art Exhibition at our local Balmain gallery and was bowled over when they sold. That is where all of this really began.
I began exhibiting in more galleries and worked towards a solo exhibition — nerve racking, and a thrill. A painting I entered into competition was featured in International Artist magazine for abstract and expressionism. That was a real art buzz.
With my art I try to create something that is emotive. I am fascinated by texture, always experimenting, and I would describe my style as somewhere between impressionism, expressionism and abstraction. I work with all mediums on lots of different substrates, big and small, and finish many pieces in resin, which gives them a depth and a glass-like surface that a photograph never quite catches. From twenty-five years living by the ocean in Sydney, and from being born on the North Wales coast, I have a love of water and am inspired by its many patterns and reflections — you will notice how many paintings here have a water theme.
More recently I started a series called Hills & Valleys, which is fitting: we live in the Brecon Beacons National Park, and are lucky to have stunning views of the Black Mountains and the landscape around them.
